Spanish telecommunications leader
As part of its business development plan, Telefónica aims to deliver enhanced economic performance from the data generated by its devices and customers.
It offers client firms personalised and data-driven geolocation solutions adapted to their needs.
Provide optimal solutions. Return on data.
Telefónica aims to analyse the data received from customers and devices in order to offer objective responses to customer uncertainties. For example, by studying the behaviour and flows of people’s movements through mobile data to optimise city traffic.
Although the data is always of the same type, customer problems and needs are not.
The technical challenge is how to manage all that data and all those calculations to deliver on this growing service while reducing platform costs.
Data-focused. Resource and process optimisation.
Despite the variety of customers and their needs, we tried to look for common use cases. In this way we avoided processing the same data several times, reducing computation costs.
Monitoring platform and processes allowed us to find possible oversized components and control per-component and per-process expenses.
Boost pay-as-you-go services such as the Amazon Web Service Elastic MapReduce.
Move older data to a cheaper storage system (AWS Glacier).
Work closely with devops teams to optimise processes.
Generate infrastructure as code, minimising new developments.

LUCA: data is business
With almost 6 years behind it, the LUCA project has become one of Telefónica’s core business lines.
Over time, data has been found to generate new opportunities for customers, demonstrating that good data management and the platforms that enrich it open up new business opportunities.
